MOSCOW, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Sergei Kiriyenko
worked out urgent measures at the weekend to tackle the effects
of Russia's financial crisis on the banking and industrial
sectors, Itar-Tass news agency said on Sunday.
It quoted the government press service as saying Kiriyenko
had held a series of meetings on Saturday and Sunday. It said
the main focus had been on securing guarantees of protection for
ordinary people's savings in Russian banks, but gave no details.
"Prime Minister Sergei Kiriyenko had a string of meetings on
Saturday and Sunday at which a series of urgent measures were
worked out for normalising the situation in the banking and
industry sectors," Tass said.
The government press service was not immediately available
to comment. But Tass said the government would be ready to
toughen control on the actions of private banks and could go as
far as to reform the banking system in general.
The agency said Kiriyenko had also discussed moves to boost
industrial production, which would now be given priority in the
government's efforts to pull Russia out of crisis. Radical
measures were also considered to end a circle of non-payments in
the economy, including barring barter deals, it said.
Kiriyenko plans to discuss the measures with President Boris
Yeltsin on Monday, Tass said.
